Search Engine Optimisation (SEO): Part 1

By now we have covered what is search engine optimization and why it is needed in the first part.

Now, in this (and next) post we will learn how to do search engine optimization.

Before we go, it is important to know that SEO takes time to show results. We can learn it quickly, and then start doing it but it takes around 2-3 months to actually see the results of your work.

Search engines are smart, and they keep on upgrading their algorithms that decide the results. So basically the techniques which worked 2 years ago, might not work now. Or worse, they might bring down the rank instead of raising it.

The techniques explained here and in next posts are latest and will help you keeping your website’s visibility high in coming future as well. Shortcuts and tactics are not appreciated or advised.

In this post 2 major SEO methods will be explained and rest will be explained in next posts. Let see how to make your webpages search engine friendly:

Good Quality Content

The contents on your pages must be targeted for humans, not for search engines. It is true that most online readers do not actually read the content but search engine algorithms are designed in a way that they rank good quality content higher than average or poor contents.

Penguin algorithm is applied in search engines and it actually punishes deliberate and unnecessary use of keywords.

Below points should be considered while posting the content

* Content should be original and not a copy of any other web source.

* Content should provide some learning and takeaways to the users and it should be engaging enough so that people would want to share.

* Sharing contents on social media is a good strategy as it tells search engines that your content is social and good in quality.

* Update your old contents. You might have one or two years old content on your page but it is possible in this period more keyword became much popular than yours. Also, you are better in SEO then 2 year old self. So update your old contents with new keywords and rewrite them accordingly.

* Content length should be 300-600 words each page. Lesser than this is considered to be incomplete and bigger than this is considered to be stretched deliberately to cover maximum keywords.

Backlinking

Backlinks are links (URL) of your website or page on other websites. If used correctly, backlinks gives you many visitors and also helps a lot in SEO ranking. Below are the key points to remember while creating backlinks:

* Most valuable back links are those which are on other relevant websites. It works 10 times better when these other websites are recognized authoritative sites. Means if your website is an online book library, it should be back linked to some good university websites. Hope you got the point.

* Be informed, if you create 10 back links on one site it would still be considered as one. So, instead of creating 200 back links on 30 websites, it is better to create 40 back links on 40 different websites.

* Irrelevant back links will be penalized by search engines. If your website sells books and you back link it on a restaurant’s page, it will degrade your search engine visibility.

These are two from many SEO techniques. Other methods will be covered in the upcoming posts.
