Required software development freelancer for Remote Computer Checks for Commands to Run job

I have a Raspberry Pi that uses Raspbian Lite. Its a baseline configuration, except it will be mounted as read only, and it has a line in /etc/rc.local where it loads and preforms a set of instructions based on its mac address when the machine boots up
The types of jobs it receives run continuously and indefinitely. This setup suits me well for the most part, however, I have no way to stop the machine or give it new instructions, short of updating the jobs.php file and restarting the computer.
What I would like would be some way for the pi to get and execute its instruction from the remote computer, but for it to check back in on a set frequency to see if there are new instructions. If the instruction is the same it will continue operating. If the instruction is different it will cancel its current instruction and execute its new instruction. It should continue checking back with the remote computer in case there are any new instructions.
