Our project is focused on developing a series of health education videos for refugee and immigrant children in the Houston area.
We are developing health education materials to bridge the gap in information taught by the public school system, to emphasize the importance of health, safety, and wellness through a variety of topics. While materials addressing these topics do exist, these materials do not involve children and narrators who are representative of refugee populations, and therefore are not culturally-inclusive. Because of these issues, there is a need for culturally-sensitive, age- and language-appropriate educational materials to help refugee children adapt to life in the United States. The goal of our project is to meet these needs through the development of short instructional videos that can be embedded into classroom curricula.
To develop the scripts for the videos, we worked with students who participate in after school programs with the Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees (PAIR). PAIR exists to create a safe space for refugee students in middle school and high school to build social and emotional skills with the aid of community mentors. These students were integral in developing the vision for these first videos and helping to write the scripts. They have provided great insight into how to successfully engage younger students through these videos and ensure our materials are culturally-sensitive, age- and language-appropriate. Additionally, many of these students were thrilled to be featured as the actors and actresses in our first video.
We have now produced our first video and are looking for a voice actress to narrate our second video on the topic of bicycle safety. Our video focuses on street safety, as many refugee and immigrant children in the Houston area walk or bike across busy six-lane roads to get to school. We are looking for a voice actress to read the narration component of our script, a character named 'Officer Wheeler,' which in the video will be played by a high-school aged female. The video is -3 minutes in length. The entire video needs to be completed in 15 days, and therefore we are looking for someone who would be available within the next month to complete this job.
