Looking for somebody who can design a fancy edge detection algorithm in matlab

I have a 3d volume, i can make this file available to anybody who is interested (its about 400mb).... I will share sample file after conversation..(removed by Toogit admin) i need to do some fancy edge detection on this volume to determine the wall thickness of the flat panel that you can see there (noting the defect holes in it)... if you will see one slice through this volume that shows some of the more difficult defects. you can see the top 5 defects (may only be able to see 4) that extend most of the way thorugh the wall, followed by less and less.. and the width of each defect decreases in each set but the depth through the wall is constant. I want an algorithm that picks the wall thickness. Its challenging because the bleedout from the edges of more narrow features means that any kind of thresholding algorithm fails. Im thinking there must be a smart way of doing this? Maybe some kind of neural net technique or something that is behond my expertise....

I have designed an algorithm and you can see where it falls down in myalgorithm.png.. the red line down the right hand side has picked the wall features, and you can see for example in the top set the thickness that the defect extends through the wall tapers off due to the thresholding and then in subsequent sets it hardly picks the defect.

Open to any and all suggestions. Ideally id like somebody to make me a nice function i can call with the 3d volume and it will automatically analyze it. I also dont want to be having to fiddle with thresholding values to make it work, it needs to automatically adjust to the scenario.

Also, i dont mind if we cannot pick all the features, but id like to be able to get as many as we possibly can.
