OpenWRT / OpenVPN Firewall Modification

This is not a huge task, but is a project looking to redirect a page based on the status of the VPN and also allow a URL to resolve when the VPN connection drops.

Greater detail can be supplied on request:

I am attempting to customise some OpenWRT firmware and need to make a couple of customisations (namely to a page redirect based on VPN firewall rules + another modification to firewall rules). Would be keen to see if you are available for this / if it is within your area of knowledge.

*Desired function (Task 1): Exclude our URL from kill switch firewall rules so it continues to resolve when VPN = down*

The issue is that in order to re-connect to OpenVPN we use an API which fetches the best server from a URL at our website.

Therefore, when OpenVPN connection has dropped and the rules which prevent data from leaking are applied - we would like our website to still be reachable (forwarding enabled only for that domain).

I would still like this domain to resolve over OpenVPN when the VPN is up, its just when it is down that I would like it to be excluded from the kill switch (the rules which prevent

*Desired function (Task 2):

Currently when the VPN drops and the kill switch firewall rules are applied the user does not know whether the VPN connection has dropped or alternatively if there is some other internet disconnection that has occurred (such as not having joined a network).

What I would like to do is redirect the user to a page when kill switch is on = so that they know the VPN has dropped and can reconnect.

Whether this would be achieved with a captive portal solution or some sort of .nxdomain rule that only runs when kill switch firewall rules are on I am not sure but happy to discuss the best solution for this use case.
