Data Scientist

Luffa Political Consulting is seeking an enthusiastic data scientist to develop and manage a
political database software, and lead data mining to support our consulting work on Myanmars
peace process and expansion into other countries and sectors. You will be involved in spotting
trends and revealing insights that will influence important political and business decisions. This
position is required to work remotely and only full time for the first 1-2 months to construct the
software, and 1-2 days a week after to maintain and develop various products.
Job Description
- Deliver scraping (for Twitter & Facebook), ingestion of news media content, manual
entry of insider sources, and structuring these into a database design that will serve as
the core resource for our analysis work and subscription services
- Tagging and automatic categorisation of information from media articles and social
media feeds in the database
- Conduct end-to-end analysis - data gathering, cleaning, processing, analysis - and guide
the development of our recommendation algorithms and predictive tools
- Build products with the analysis team and evolve the engineering process to scale and
handle complex problems and advanced client requirements
- Lead the visualisation of data and make strategic recommendations (e.g. identifying
significant changes, stakeholder mapping, creating danger alerts, gauging changing
sentiments, predicting future shifts)
- Create a backend interface of the database for the team to view and edit, and frontend
interface to present products to clients
- Provide creative and experimental solutions to analytical problems
Requirements
- Final year Computer Science student or recent graduate
- Familiarity with LDT (Latent Dirichlet Allocation)
- A good mix of statistical knowledge, programming skills and business focus
- Fluent in Python, R, Java
- Experience with Cloud services (GCP/ AWS) for Machine Learning pipeline deployment
- Experience in visualization using off-the-shelf software: R, Python, Gephi, Tableau etc.
- Be able to work remotely, independently and efficiently to deliver high quality products
on time
- Possess strong project and time management skills
- Communicate effectively and promptly with the team
Advantageous, but not required:
- Working experience as a data scientist

- Experience in machine learning, deep learning, statistical analysis, or social network
analysis
- Prior work with relational SQL and NoSQL databases (Hadoop or similar)
- Familiarity with Spark, Kafka, Tensorflow and equivalents, Storm, etc.
- Working knowledge of social media platforms in Myanmar and SEA
- Myanmar language proficiency
- Keen interest and understanding of politics

process by cutting the Gordian Knot - the metaphor of the luffa sponges Burmese translation
Tha-Buk-U, i.e. simplifying highly complex situations and thinking creatively to find quick
solutions to seemingly intractable problems. We work with a wide range of clients from ethnic
armed organisations, government institutions, media and international private sector clients.
With the new automated database software, we plan to expand our services beyond Myanmars
peace process to cover the business sector and other countries.
