INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

I need a real-time system for handling our inventory of products, that is accessible both on the factory floor and from the office. The product is steel bars in various lengths measured in inches from 1 to 300 inches in length. Initially, there would be a little under 3000 part numbers, and each part number would have 300 possible lengths (300 x 3000 = 90,000 part numbers).

When the operator is filling an order, he would enter what his part is and the length he needs to cut. The system would present him with options of bars that are long enough, and their inventory location,. and the operator could choose which bar he will cut it from. The system would do the simple math to list the remaining length. The operator could adjust the remaining length if needed.

The system would also need to track about 1400 inventory locations for these parts, and know what is stored in each location. Locations would also be limited by bar length. So if the operator cut a 6 foot bar from a 24 foot long bar, there would be a limited number of inventory locations where this bar could be stored. The system does not need to choose the location, only store the operators chosen location.

Eventually, I would hope to add functionality to the system and have the system have history of sales so the operator could choose the remnant length based on what has sold in the past, and integrate to the yet to be built sales order system.

At the moment, I am not really sure what we need. I dont know what platform to produce this on, or what devices will be used on the factory floor by the operators. Ultimately, I hope to build a custom ERP system to replace our legacy system, and I am using this first project to learn about what is available, and learn from whatever mistakes I make in developing this system.
