Writing task 1 for GT is a letter, for academic you have to describe a diagram which could be a graph, pie chart, flow chart or a map. Writing task 2 is very similar. The only difference is that for GT the topics will be more general.
If you write less than the required amount, you will be penalised. Writing more is less of a problem but you must make sure that whatever you write is relevant to the task. When you write too much you are more likely to write irrelevant information and stray away from the requirements of the task. In this case there will be a penalty.
