API for importing contents of another system into our SQL database

We are looking for a developer that can help create a method for our clients to submit data to our database by sending the data via an API to our systems.

Environment:
We have a Microsoft Server 2012 environment with SQL Server 2012 (with SSRS and SSAS), SharePoint 2013 and InfoPath. On this environment we have hosted a multi-client platform that allows our users to submit sustainability data to the database and then see the results of this data via SSRS reports. Data submission is done via InfoPath (hosted on SharePoint) to a web service and then into the database.

Assignment:
We want to create a method for our users to provide data to our SQL database by use of an API. This data is exported from their systems and needs to be automatically added to ours, preferably we want to be able to accept APIs in various formats.
Our plan is to provide an API to our clients that can receive the data that they want to submit, this data needs to be stored in a table on our database, and from there after applying some logic and validations it needs to be inserted to the correct places in our systems.

The main questions that we have with this are:
-How to create and host an API that can receive data
-How to store this data in our SQL database
-How to offer this API connection safely
We are able to apply the logic and validations once the data is in our database.

Complications:
The application service is set up for classic users instead of windows users. This might bring difficulties with authentication and security. Our expectation is that this is not likely to impact an API connection.
