We are looking for an experienced artificial intelligence (AI) programmer with experience in natural language processing (NLP). We are developing software to read and understand certain features of legal documents, for example trust deeds and commercial property lease agreements. The program does not need to be able to understand a complete document, in the way that a lawyer would. It needs to be able to understand only key features of the document which we specify for the particular project, such as:
- the names of the parties to the document
- what label has been given to each of the parties in the document: for example - 'trustee' or 'settlor'
- dates which are critical to the contract, such as 'commencement date', or 'termination date'
- identify certain key clauses of the contract and the number of the clause in answer to questions like: 'Does this contract have a clause that allows it to be amended?' and, if so 'What is the number of the clause which permits amendments?' and 'Which parties' consent is needed for an amendment?'
The kind of documents we would run the program against are documents which usually follow a reasonably standard form. As part of the development process we would supply a number of samples of documents of the relevant kind in somewhat different forms, for the purposes of allowing the program to be trained. The program must be capable of being taught and improving its ability to recognise different features of documents.
The brief for the first project is being finalised. We are looking for AI developers who have the ability to do this kind of work. We are inviting developers to respond and address the following in their response:
1 Give details of work they have done in this area, specifically developing programs which can read and understand certain aspects of documents (whether it be a legal document or any other kind of English-language document, experience with legal documents will be preferred.)
2 What you recommend is a good platform for developing this kind of software. Ideally we do not want all code written from scratch, but the application would make use of IBM Watson, TensorFlow, or something similar. We do not want to pay big costs to use third-party platforms, however so part of your job would be to recommend what is good value for money in an external AI development platform.
3 Provide evidence that you are able to do work in this particular field, for example give details of a public online AI application which you have designed that we can look at, where we could check with its owner that you developed it; or a letter from a company you have done development work for.
4 Your views on whether this kind of project is possible, what the challenges would be and how large a development project it is?
When we have responses from one or more developers who tell us that this kind of project is possible, we will then send out the details of the first project and samples of the class of legal documents against which the app would run.
