We are looking for an experienced and talented illustrator to bring our children's book characters and setting to life! Our story is based around a group of mystical creatures who live in the Land of Sharing called the Share Fairies. We are looking for two types of art: one type that is simpler and childlike for the 'real world' characters and scenes, and one type that is more complex and bold for the Land of Sharing and fairy characters (see images attached from our Vision Board). The juxtaposition is important to our vision. The book will be approximately 20 pages, 8' x 11,' and will require text integration, a cover (front/back/spine), a dedication page, and all other elements of a hard cover children's book.
The Vision Board photos will show one simple image for our 'real world' characters. We like this style because it is still unique in style, yet simple and less bold. The other images display art that we like for the Land of Sharing and our Share Fairies. The art is detailed and complex (pencil pictures) & bold and intense (other pictures). These are the styles of other children's books that caught our attention and drew us in to their worlds. We are open to artistic freedom and ideas from our illustrator.
The Share Fairies believe in diversity, inclusion, and gender neutrality. The artwork we envision for our fairies and the Land of Sharing showcases a plethora of diverse personalities, colors, shapes, sizes, abilities, and cultures. Boys and girls alike will identify with our fairies, which will more closely reflect an intentional artistic approach in diversity of character rather than the traditional vision of a petite, pink fairy. Think Trolls and misfits/Punky Brewster instead of the quintessential fairy character.
The Land of Sharing is also a character in and of itself. It will require detailed consideration to several boroughs within this Land, which sets up our series to be continued.
We are looking for a freelancer who is willing to work with us to bring our vision to life. Our hope is to scope the project and get a timeline drawn up that falls within the next 2-6 months. We will retain 100% of the rights, but the illustrator will be given permissions to display the work in her/his portfolio. There is a great potential for a series of books to come from this first project, so the illustrator may have future opportunities with this project.
Overall, we are looking for an illustrator who is communicative, flexible, honest, and wants to have fun! We look forward to meeting new people and finding a compatible match.
Special note: The illustrator will be asked to personalize several of the fairies and the main child character.
