I am looking for an artist to illustrate a book of poems I have written. ATM I'm just trying to narrow down the artist and a price range//quote. Soon I will organize the poems (maybe write a couple more) and decide which will have an illustration.
I am a huge fan of drawings that are whimsical and imperfect. Drawings that have kind of an earthy quality to them. I would love mostly black and white with maybe 4-5 color images tucked in (like they do with fairy tale books). The art doesn't have to look exactly like these examples (see images)-- I'm open to different ideas. This is just the general direction I'm leaning. I know for sure that I'm not interested in anything cartooney or stylized (apart from the woodcut look).
Book of Poems--
These are poems I wrote during the year that followed my mom's passing. During this time (and presently) I experience barbaric physical and psychiatric pain from brain injury. These poems include themes of death, suicide, depression, trauma, grief, iatrogenic drug damage from a medication taken as prescribed.
*Please do not get involved with this project if you can't handle these themes.
*Under no circumstances should you contact someone because you are worried about my mental health.
My injury was caused by psychiatric medication so you would be risking my life by doing that. You can find more info here: w-bad.org. I am super nice and easy going-- but I'm pretty mama bear about this boundary for good reason.
I am so looking forward to bringing this little book to life and checking it off my project list. Love them, hate them, or indifferent, writing these poems kept me alive during a time where I was basically being water boarded by my own body. Iatrogenic illness like this doesn't have too many parallels in our society. It is mideval suffering that can't be treated with pain relievers. Creativity has been a major component of helping me survive it and the loss of my mother, the love of my life.
