We're a group of professors at the University of California who study how people make choices. We're interested in understanding how factors like uncertainty and insecurity affect how well people can make decisions. One way of testing this is through a video game that lets players make a series of choices in an environment that feels important.
The game involves players moving a spaceship to different planets in search of the best place to build a colony. The graphics and sound are all designed to motivate the player to care more about the outcome, even though the underlying mechanics are very simple. The player selects one out of eight planets and then receives a reward based on how close that choice was to the best one. Over time the player can figure out which one is the best by observing the pattern of rewards.
We're looking for a dev who can maintain the existing code and expand it to incorporate new features. We need an experienced Unity programmer, someone who can work in C#, and is up to the task of adapting the existing codebase. You get to work with cool people on cool academic projects. We work on a flexible schedule to solve interesting problems. And at no point do you need to introduce micropayments into the game!
What's important however, is that you're able to diagnose and solve problems as they come up. We're not app developers, and this isn't a traditional game development project. So there certainly will be things that come up that you'll have to figure out on your own.
The specific deliverables for this project in the near term include:
1. Helping us set up a server to (securely) store game data.
2. Add a specific feature to fit into the game. We can discuss this specifically during the interview.
However, we're especially looking for someone that we can work with long-term and develop this existing app into a larger platform for the sort of research that we do.
